The rising action is the part of the story that introduces obstacles/complications and builds suspense. The climax is the turning point. In this part of the story, the conflict is at its most intense.

The rising action of a story is the section of the plot leading up to the climax, in which the tension stemming from the story’s central conflict grows through successive plot developments.

Rising action: The rising action starts right after the period of exposition and ends at the climax. Beginning with the inciting incident, rising action is the bulk of the plot. It is composed of a series of events that build on the conflict and increase the tension, sending the story racing to a dramatic climax.

In literary terms, the definition of climax is the highest point of tension in a storyline, often depicted by a confrontation between the protagonist and antagonist. A climax resolves the main conflict of the story and is the moment the main character reaches—or fails to reach—their goal.

All conflict falls into two categories: internal and external.

• Internal conflict is when a character struggles with their own opposing desires or beliefs. It happens within them, and it drives their development as a character.
• External conflict sets a character against something or someone beyond their control.

The action in a story can rise steadily, or there can be a series of rises and plateaus as the plot builds toward the ultimate climax. Examples of Rising Action: A character in a story wants to audition for the leading role in the school play, but so does his best friend, so the character has to decide what he will do.

Kenneth Thomas and Ralph Kilmann developed five conflict resolution strategies that people use to handle conflict, including avoiding, defeating, compromising, accommodating, and collaborating. This is based on the assumption that people choose how cooperative and how assertive to be in a conflict.

Here is the conflict resolution process in five steps.

1. Step 1: Define the source of the conflict.
2. Step 2: Look beyond the incident.
3. Step 3: Request solutions.
4. Step 4: Identify solutions both disputants can support.
5. Step 5: Agreement.

The 7 Steps to Resolve a Conflict

• Step 1: Agree to talk and establish ground rules for the discussion.
• Step 2: Take turns in explaining your feelings and thoughts about the situation.
• Step 3: Identify the conflict.
• Step 4: Take turns in exploring options to resolve the conflict.
• Step 5: Agree on a solution.

Exposition. The initial incident, is when we find out that Carl’s wife, Ellie, passes away, and it shows how alone he has been. In the beginning of the movie, we are introduced to Carl, and Ellie. They first met when they were kids, and they both had common interest in a famous pilot named Charles Muntz.

To really rip the band aid right off this emotional wound of a theory: Carl is dead. He died at the beginning of the movie and everything after is his journey to heaven. When did he die? In his sleep, the night after the court tells him he needs to leave his house and move to a retirement home.

Death. Ellie eventually forgot about Carl’s promise as their marriage continued to flourish blissfully into old age. Then one day while out on another picnic with her husband (who was planning to surprise her with the plane tickets he had bought), she collapsed from illness and became hospitalized.

It seems that when Ellie lost her ability to conceive naturally, they just gave up on having a child altogether even though they really wanted one. Obviously fertility treatments didn’t exist back then, but I’m pretty sure there were still plenty of kids in need of adoption. They didn’t have to be all sad and alone.

Yep, according to some fans, Carl Fredricksen dies in his sleep after he is notified that he needs to leave his beloved house and move to a retirement home. Therefore, everything that happens in the film represents the afterlife.

Muntz became ruthless and paranoid, determined to do anything to obtain the bird and believing that anyone who came to Paradise Falls was after the bird to steal his glory, presumably leading him to kill anyone he met.

Given that 1 cubic foot of helium can lift 0.067 pounds, it would take 1,492,537 cubic feet of helium to lift the house—or about as much as would be contained in 105,854 balloons, each 3 feet in diameter. So 105,854 of them would add 6,615 pounds to the weight of the house.

While Paradise Falls is fictional, a similar mountain really does exist in South America called Mount Roraima that juts straight out of Earth on the borders of Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana. Nicknamed the Floating Islandl, it’s so unique, scientists are still trying to understand its ecosystem.

So a normal amusement park balloon can lift about 14 grams, assuming that the weight of the balloon itself and the string is negligible. So you need roughly 4,000 balloons to lift yourself if you weigh 50 kilograms, and you can adjust that number according to your weight.

Did you know there is a real-life version of Disney Pixar’s “Up” House? It is located in Herriman, Utah, about 30 minutes south of Salt Lake City.

As Carl, Russell, Kevin, and Dug attempt to escape, however, it is short lived. Muntz shoots down half of the remaining balloons, causing the house to fall. The garden hose breaks from it, causing it to finally descend as Muntz falls to his death after snagging a few balloons on his leg.

The team from National Geographic have built a house inspired by the Pixar movie Up! that can really fly. Using 300 helium-filled weather balloons, a team of scientists, engineers, two balloon pilots and dozens of volunteers, they managed to get the small house 10,000 feet into the air.

The film’s main character is Glory (Taylor Richardson), an 11-year-old with severe autism, whose caretaker (AnnaSophia Robb of “The Carrie Diaries”) turns out to be a teenage grifter, much to the alarm of Glory’s parents (Famke Janssen and Scott Cohen). Russell, was diagnosed with autism at age 2.

A fan post on Reddit suggests that in reality Carl dies in the early moments of Up and he makes his journey to the Paradise Falls with Russell, in his afterlife. A reddit user named ‘bubonis’ stated that the notion of Carl turning his house into a floatable abode seems too unreal in the real world.

Ellie and Carl lose their baby and, it seems, can’t have any more kids. From there, Ellie dies, we find out that a businessman is trying to buy Carl’s house so he can build on the property, and Carl is ordered to leave his beloved home and enter a nursing home.

Russell’s mother is a minor character in Disney/Pixar’s 2009 animated feature film, Up.
