PTT in aviation is commonly known as push to talk (PTT) switch. You press the button and hold it down to transmit voice message. It instantly connects to radio, audio panel, intercoms, or headsets on aircraft. You have to press to transmit the voice message from your side.

Push-to-talk, push to talk, or PTT, works by facilitating conversations across various communications lines. A push-to-talk switch or button is used to switch users from voice mode to transmit mode.

PTT = Push To Talk. The mic has a switch that must be activated (pushed) before talking into the mic. Note a PTT mic often features an additional pair of wires that are not part of the mic audio circuit.

All two way radios have a Push-To-Talk button. This is the button, usually located on the side of the radio, that is held down to make the radio transmit, and then released when the user has finished transmitting and wishes to listen for messages from other radios.

The default Push To Talk key is Alt Left and can be edited from the Keyboard and Mouse menu in the in-game settings.

When an app offers Push-to-talk, or PTT, the speaker simply presses the PTT button to talk to the group – and keeps the button pressed while they are speaking. The PTT key is familiar for traditional radio users: a PTT call is the best, quickest way for a group of people to communicate together.

This essentially makes your mic a “hot mic.” That means anyone around you can hear you regardless if you’re pressing “V” or not. This takes away the worry of wondering if you need to push-to-talk for a ghost to hear you. Of course, if you do this, be ready to be the one shoved into a room alone with a spirit box.

How do you respond to a radio check?

• When clear, say: “[Their call sign], this is [your call sign], roger, over.”
• If they don’t have a clear signal, say: “[Their call sign], this is [your call sign], message coming in broken, over.”

B uild a cable with an isolated ‘gate’ circuit that opens the radio’s PTT circuit when it receives a signal from the serial or parallel port.Use the cable above with a serial-to-USB port adapter connected to the computer’s USB port instead of the serial port. PTT switches a phone from full duplex mode, where both parties can hear each other simultaneously, to half duplex mode, where only one party can speak at one time. Multiple parties to the conversation may also be included.

Use a cable with a single insulated wire and a braided shield. Attach the shield on each side of the optocoupler to either the radio or computer ground, but do not connect the grounds together. If you have a DB9 Serial port (COM), use RTS (Request To Send) pin # 7 for PTT control on a one radio cable.
