A narrator is the person from whose perspective a story is told. A narrator only exists in fictional texts or in a narrative poem. A narrator may be a character in the text; however, the narrator does not have to be a character in the text. The point of a narrator is to narrate a story, i.e., to tell the story.

A rare form of the first person is the first person omniscient, in which the narrator is a character in the story, but also knows the thoughts and feelings of all the other characters.

Point of view isn’t easy though, since there are so many to choose from: first person, third person limited, third person omniscient, second person.

Some guidelines:

1. If you want to write the entire story in individual, quirky language, choose first person.
2. If you want your POV character to indulge in lengthy ruminations, choose first person.
3. If you want your reader to feel high identification with your POV character, choose first person or close third.

The 4th person is a new emerging point-of-view. It is a group or collective perspective corresponding to “we” or “us”. A global top-down perspective. The 4th person functions as a collection of perspectives rather than a single objectivity.

The third-person point of view belongs to the person (or people) being talked about. The third-person pronouns include he, him, his, himself, she, her, hers, herself, it, its, itself, they, them, their, theirs, and themselves. Tiffany used her prize money from the science fair to buy herself a new microscope.

Here are some writing tips for how to begin your first-person story:

1. Establish a clear voice.
2. Start mid-action.
3. Introduce supporting characters early.
4. Use the active voice.
5. Decide if your narrator is reliable.
6. Decide on a tense for your opening.
7. Study first-person opening lines in literature.

Young children in Japan commonly refer to themselves by their own name. This is due to the Japanese way of speaking, in which referring to another in the third person is considered more polite than using any of the Japanese words for “you”.

Third-Person Pronouns and Particles For example, to say “his” in Japanese, you use a third-person pronoun plus the particle の, because の shows that the noun immediately before it is in the possessive form. So if you use 彼 to say “his,” it’s going to look like: 彼の

As a person who has transcended time, she is simultaneously Mayuri and Not-Mayuri; for this reason, she speaks about herself in the third person to make it clear that she’s talking about the part of herself that exists in that present time.

During the Muppets, Music & Magic event at The Cinema Arts Centre in August 2007, Elmo says that he speaks in third person because he is paid every time he says his own name.
