Generally, a citation will include: the name of the book, article, or other resource; the name of its author; information (if applicable) about the journal it came from; the date it was published; and when it was accessed if it was read online.

You do not need to use quotation marks. Always use in-text citations when you paraphrase or summarize, to let the reader know that the information comes from another source.

ALWAYS CITE, in the following cases: When you quote two or more words verbatim, or even one word if it is used in a way that is unique to the source. Explanation. When you introduce facts that you have found in a source.

Give an in-text citation (i.e. in brackets or footnotes, depending on the style you are using) at the place where they are included in your writing and a full citation in the bibliography or reference list for the text you got them from. This includes graphs and tables, as well as illustrations and photographs.

The most common citation styles are the following:

• MLA style in the humanities (e.g. literature or languages).
• APA style in the social sciences (e.g. psychology or education).
• Chicago notes and bibliography in history.
• Chicago author-date in the sciences.

These references help to support your work with relevant research and give credit to original authors. In-text citations often come at the end of a sentence and must have a matching reference at the end of the paper. A reference should provide complete information about a source and where it can be found.

Works Cited and Bibliography are not the same. In Works Cited you only list items you have actually referred to and cited in your paper. A Bibliography lists all of the material you have consulted in preparing your essay whether or not you have actually referred to and cited the work.
