Naples, in all its hot, hedonistic and high-spirited glory, isn’t typically the first choice for an Italian city break. For visitors, the country’s third city after Rome and Milan has traditionally been the mere launchpad to the nearby Amalfi Coast, or the archaeological wonderland of Pompeii.

Napoli is the Italian language name for the city, gulf, and province of Naples.

The name “Two Sicilies” originated from the partition of the medieval Kingdom of Sicily. As a result of the War of the Sicilian Vespers (1282–1302), the King of Sicily lost the Island of Sicily (also called Trinacria) to the Crown of Aragon, but remained ruler over the peninsular part of the realm.

It was claimed by the French king Charles VIII, who held it briefly (1495). Won by the Spanish in 1504, Naples and Sicily were ruled by viceroys for two centuries. Under Spain the country was regarded merely as a source of revenue and experienced a steady economic decline.

Naples, or the Kingdom of Sicily, was valuable because of its proximity to the papacy and while the Papal States had been nominally independent since the 1200s, as the largest sovereign state in Italy, the rulers of Sicily/Naples held considerable influence, hence it was coveted by all the major powers – Spain, France.

Like in any big city in Europe, pickpocketing, bag snatching and fraud at street markets can occur in Naples. It’s mostly small crime of convenience which can be relatively safeguarded with some basic safety rules. As for violent crime, is extremely rare amongst tourists.

There is truth to the common stereotype that Naples, Italy is a poor and dirty city ruled by the mafia. Indeed, organized crime and political corruption have hampered the city’s development for decades. Despite being a major tourist destination, Naples is one of the poorest cities in Europe.
