In fulminant cases, acute gastric dilatation may cause severe vomiting, aspiration, fluid and electrolyte disturbances, dehydration, perforation, peritonitis, and shock.

Treatments to prevent or relieve bloating

1. Avoid chewing gum.
2. Limit your intake of carbonated drinks.
3. Avoid foods that cause gas, such vegetables in the cabbage family, dried beans, and lentils.
4. Eat slowly and avoid drinking through a straw.
5. Use lactose-free dairy products (if you are lactose intolerant).

Bloat, also known as gastric torsion, and also as gastric dilation volvulus (GDV) syndrome, is a life-threatening disorder that happens when a dog’s stomach fills with gas and becomes twisted. It mainly occurs in deep-chested breeds.

When your stomach swells and feels hard, the explanation might be as simple as overeating or drinking carbonated drinks, which is easy to remedy. Other causes may be more serious, such as an inflammatory bowel disease. Sometimes the accumulated gas from drinking a soda too quickly can result in a hard stomach.

Bloat/GDV will not resolve itself. If a dog with GDV is not brought for prompt veterinary care and surgery, the dog will not survive.
