A language is the main medium of communicating between the Computer systems and the most common are the programming languages. As we know a Computer only understands binary numbers that is 0 and 1 to perform various operations but the languages are developed for different types of work on a Computer.

He enumerates seven of them: duality, productivity, arbitrariness, interchangeability, specialisation, displacement and cultural transmission (1958: 574). Hockett refrains from qualifying the seven properties as more or less important but seems to treat them as equally fundamental to the characterisation of language.

Language can have scores of characteristics but the following are the most important ones: language is arbitrary, productive, creative, systematic, vocalic, social, non-instinctive and conventional. These characteristics of language set human language apart from animal communication.

Language techniques are the elements that a writer brings to his or her story to emphasize the theme on which they are focusing. It plays an important factor in writing an essay or story. Language techniques and elements can be found anywhere in the story.

literary techniques, for example similes and metaphors. other language techniques, for example emotive language, hyperbole or terms of address. language choices within dialogue , for instance if dialect is used to reveal more about a character.

Words and sentences have parts that combine in patterns, exhibiting the grammar of the language. Phonology is the study of patterns in sound or gesture. Syntax and Semantics involve studying patterns in sentence structure, from the vantages of form and meaning, respectively.

A literary device is a tool used by writers to hint at larger themes, ideas, and meaning in a story or piece of writing. There are many styles of literary devices, each serving a different purpose. Writers often use multiple literary devices in tandem.

A plot device is a storytelling tool or technique that is used to propel a narrative. A well-written plot device can be deeply satisfying to a reader or audience member. For instance, simple flashbacks, which elucidate a character’s backstory, are plot devices.

Metaphor, metonymy, hyperbole, simile, personification, assonance, alliteration, consonance, onomatopoeia, etc. These devices have a powerful impact as they work on our senses to strengthen the subject matter of the text. You will find specific examples of the above techniques throughout this toolkit.

Walker uses Dee’s symbol of success and pride to illustrate how that confidence can grow into a disregard for one’s own culture, past and family. Like her new name, she believes the quilts connect her to her heritage, when actually she knows nothing about either.

One of the most prominent literary techniques that Alice Walker uses in “Everyday Use” is irony. Dee’s lack of understanding of her own heritage makes her final comment to her mother ironic when she says to Mama “you just don’t understand….

The yard in “Everyday Use” may symbolize freedom, peace, new beginnings, and embracing one’s identity. Because the yard is an extension of the house, it may also symbolize contentment, as the house represents the life Maggie and Mama have built for themselves and love.
