Isometric drawings are not actual 3D drawings, they are made with 2D geometries but they appear like 3D. Isometric drawing in AutoCAD can be made by tilting viewing angle to 30 degrees for all of its sides in the 2D plane.

SOLIDWORKS has a 2D to a 3D tool that allows you to import your dxf/dwg files as a sketch in your part. You can access it by enabling the 2D to a 3D toolbar in Views > Toolbars > 2D to 3D. You can also use search command and input “2D to 3D” in the search box.

In 2D and 3D, the “D” specifies the dimensions involved in the shape. So, the primary difference between 2D and 3D shapes is that a 2D shape comprised of two dimensions that are length and width. As against, a 3D shape incorporates three dimensions that are length, width and height.

‘2D’, or ‘two-dimensional’, simply means that the shape is flat. A ‘3D’ (‘three-dimensional’) shape is a solid shape. It has three dimensions, that is, length, width and depth.

2D shapes have only 2 dimensions and are flat e.g. square, rectangle, triangle, circle, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon, parallelogram, rhombus, kite, quadrilateral, trapezium. 3D objects have three dimensions.

A cylinder has two flat ends in the shape of circles. These two faces are connected by a curved face that looks like a tube. If you make a flat net for a cylinder, it looks like a rectangle with a circle attached at each end.

If a shape has two dimensions, it means there are 2 ways it can be measured in space. All 2D shapes can be measured by their length and width or length and height. But remember, shapes that are 2D are completely flat. For example, the square below is a shape in 2D because it’s flat and has straight sides.
