An internal data bus (also called internal bus) is a bus that operates only within the internal circuitry of the CPU, communicating among the internal caches of memory that are part of the CPU chip’s design. Contrast with external data bus. The bit width of internal and external data buses are not always equal.

The external data bus connects the processor to adapters, the keyboard, the mouse, the hard drive, and other devices. An external data bus is also known as an external data path. You can see the external data lines by looking between the expansion slots on the motherboard.
