HomeArticles, FAQWhat is HBSS solution?

Hanks’ Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) is an isotonic buffer solution containing inorganic salts and a carbohydrate as an energy source. HBSS is manufactured with and without calcium and magnesium salts, and with and without phenol red.

Q. How much calcium is in HBSS?

Add 350 mg of NaHCO3 to the solution….HBSS (Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution) Preparation and Recipe.

ComponentAmountConcentration
NaCl (mw: 58.44 g/mol)8 g0.14 M
KCl (mw: 74.55 g/mol)400 mg0.005 M
CaCl2 (mw: 110.98 g/mol)140 mg0.001 M

Q. What is Hank’s solution used for?

Hanks’ Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) is composed of inorganic salts and supplemented with glucose. The solution may be used to wash cells and tissue and to maintain cells in a viable state. The solution is buffered with phosphate and maintains a physiological pH and osmotic pressure.

Q. What is the pH of HBSS?

pH 7.4

Q. Does HBSS contain calcium?

We offer a variety of Gibco® HBSS formulations for a range of cell culture applications….This HBSS is modified as follows:

WithWithout
• Calcium• Phenol Red
• Magnesium• Sodium Pyruvate
• Glucose

Q. How do you sterilize HBSS?

Sterilize immediately by filtration using a membrane with a porosity of 0.22 microns. 8. Aseptically dispense medium into sterile container. Store the dry powdered salts at 2-8 °C under dry conditions and liquid medium at 2-8 °C in the dark.

Q. Where is GIBCO HBSS manufactured in the USA?

Gibco® HBSS is manufactured at a cGMP compliant facility, located in Grand Island, New York. The facility is registered with the FDA as a medical device manufacturer and is certified to ISO 13485 standards. For supply chain continuity, we offer an identical Gibco® HBSS product made in our Scotland facility (14065-049).

Q. What can GIBCO 10x HBSS be used for?

Gibco™ HBSS (10X), calcium, magnesium, no phenol red For use with for variety of cell culture applications, such as washing cells before dissociation, transporting cells or tissue samples, diluting cells for counting and preparing reagents Manufacturer: Gibco™ 14065056 Catalog No. 14-065-056

Q. What can GIBCO be used for in cell culture?

For use with for a variety of cell culture applications, such as washing cells before dissociation, transporting cells or tissue samples, diluting cells for counting, and preparing reagents Need it Now? See alternate available products .

Q. What should the temperature be to store HBSS?

The recommended storage condition for our HBSS products is at 15-30 degrees C. Generally, storage at 4 degrees C will not impact these products. The only concern would be for the 10x HBSS solutions with calcium and magnesium as these salts might precipitate when stored outside the recommended temperature ranges.
