Gifted education (also known as gifted and talented education (GATE), talented and gifted programs (TAG), or G/T education) is a broad group of special practices, procedures, and theories used in the education of children who have been identified as gifted or talented.

To qualify for gifted status, students generally had to score at least 130 on the IQ test.

Although being identified as gifted can lead to unrealistic expectations, it can also help a student reach their potential. Evidence suggests that gifted programs help students with academic achievement, socialization, and future success.

The students are put into a peer group that is at their advanced academic level. The students will have access to more resources than they would have in the average classroom. The program helps gifted students reach for and achieve their personal best work.

Mandatory Referral, Identification, and Evaluation Services provide referral, identification and evaluation services only for gifted and talented children enrolled in grades kindergarten to twelve, inclusive, in a public school under the jurisdiction of such board of education.

You may have a high achieving student who isn’t GT who accomplishes incredible things; colleges love to see this. However, colleges won’t be impressed with a student who is identified as gifted who has shown no use of his abilities.

Giftedness is often defined as an intellectual ability linked to an IQ score of 130 or over. However, not all gifted children excel in an academic area. Some may display high creative, artistic, musical and/or leadership abilities relative to their peers.
