Food chain is a linear sequence of organisms which starts from producer organisms and ends with decomposer species. Food web is a connection of multiple food chains. Food chain follows a single path whereas food web follows multiple paths. From the food chain, we get to know how organisms are connected with each other.

A food web consists of many food chains. A food chain only follows just one path as animals find food. eg: A hawk eats a snake, which has eaten a frog, which has eaten a grasshopper, which has eaten grass. A food web shows the many different paths plants and animals are connected.

Food Chains on Land

The organisms that eat the producers are the primary consumers. They tend to be small in size and there are many of them. The primary consumers are herbivores (vegetarians). The organisms that eat the primary consumers are meat eaters (carnivores) and are called the secondary consumers.

There are two types of autotrophs: photoautotrophs and chemoautotrophs. Photoautotrophs get their energy from sunlight and convert it into usable energy (sugar). This process is called photosynthesis.

Chemoautotrophs are microorganisms that use inorganic chemicals as their energy source and convert them into organic compounds. Some examples of chemoautotrophs include sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, nitrogen-fixing bacteria and iron-oxidizing bacteria.

Vultures,worms,and crabs are 3 examples of 3 detritivores. They feed on dead organisms. Decomposers feeds on dead plants and animals and helps recycle them.

Cows

A food chain in an ecosystem is a series of organisms in which each organism feeds on the one below it in the series. In a forest ecosystem, grass is eaten by a deer, which in turn is eaten by a tiger. The grass, deer and tiger form a food chain (Figure 8.2).
