The law of prägnanz is sometimes referred to as the law of good figure or the law of simplicity. This law holds that when you’re presented with a set of ambiguous or complex objects, your brain will make them appear as simple as possible. The word prägnanz is a German term meaning “good figure.”

The figure-ground relationship is one of several principles referred to as Gestalt. principles of perception. It asserts that the human perceptual system separates. stimuli into either figure elements or ground elements.

Definition. Figure-ground discrimination or perception refers to the ability to separate the elements of a visual image on the basis of contrast (e.g., light, dark), to perceive an object (figure) against a background (ground).

Figure-ground perception is the ability to differentiate an object from its background. Children who struggle with this skill often have trouble learning to read, particularly as their books feature an increasing number of words on each page. It’s also hard for them to scan text for relevant information.

3. find a specific toy in the toy-box.
4. find a favorite t-shirt in the cupboard.
5. find a dropped item if it fell onto a similar colored background (eg a green button on the grass)

Visual discrimination is the ability to detect differences in and ability to classify objects, symbols, or shapes. These can be categorized by color, position, form, pattern, texture, as well as size.

Figure Ground is the ability to perceive the foreground from the background in a visual array. Impairments in this area of visual perception may interfere with finding specific pictures, symbols, letters, numbers or words in a book, on a board, or on other visual material.

More Activities to help with Visual Memory Deficits:

1. Memory Games. games or Concentration games.
2. I Spy games. and books. .
3. Form copying games, such as Pixy Cubes. Shape sequencing games, like Mental Blox.
4. Place a tray of items in front of the child. Allow them 30 seconds to memorize all of the items.

Focusing on different aspects of the pictures when looking at them over and over activates visual working memory. With time, and repeated exposures, the pictures will be remembered better and better. Interestingly, visual working activity is related to mathematical problem solving.

Visual memory is the ability to remember or recall information such as activities, pictures, or words that have been viewed in the past. Short-term visual memory is the ability to recall images that have just been viewed.

Students with good visual memory will recognize that same word later in their readers or other texts and will be able to recall the appearance of the word to spell it. Children who have not developed their visual memory skills cannot readily reproduce a sequence of visual stimuli.
