C45 grade steel is a medium carbon steel offering moderate tensile strengths. The material is capable of through hardening by quenching and tempering on limited sections but can also be flame or induction hardened to Hrc 55. Machinability similar to that of mild steel can be expected, however weldability is reduced.

EN8M steel (212M36) is a through hardening carbon manganese free-cutting steel, usually supplied untreated. En8m steel has good tensile strength and is often used in gears, shafts, stressed pins, studs, bolts, keys etc. EN8M steel is a free-machining grade and is readily machinable in any condition.

EN8 and EN8D are popular grade of steel for industry purpose. EN8 is medium carbon steel, through-hardened. EN8D is carbon steel with enhanced wear resistance. It is known to be surface-hardened version of EN8 by induction processes.

Mechanical Properties

EN8 steel grade belongs to the standard of BS 970-1955, which is a standard for wrought steel for mechanical and allied engineering purpose. In BS 970 standards, there are some other common steel grades, like EN9, EN19, EN24, EN36 etc. And the most equivalent is grade 080M40 steel in BS 970-1991.

EN8 is an unalloyed medium carbon steel grade with reasonable tensile strength. It is normally supplied in the cold drawn or as rolled condition. Tensile properties can vary but are usually between 500-800 N/mm².

EN8 is a tough-hardening medium carbon steel that is usually used for creating axles, shafts, gears, bolts, and studs. mild steel is weldable, very hard, and very durable even though it rusts. mild steel is a smaller amount brittle, and able to flex to avoid breakage.

Cast iron is a common gear material due to its good wearing properties, machinability, and the ease of producing complicated shapes via metal casting. Worm gears tend to use phosphor bronze because of the material’s wear resistance ability. Carbon or alloy steels are commonly used due to their high strength values.

The ASTM equivalents for JIS G3101 SS400 steel are ASTM A36 and ASTM A283C; the EN equivalent for JIS G3101 SS400 steel is S235JR. The DIN equivalent for JIS G3101 SS400 steel is ST37-2; and the GB equivalent for JIS G3101 SS400 steel is Q235B.

SS410 has good tensile strength, creep and fatigue strength and other mechanical properties, mainly used in steam turbines, jet engines and gas turbines.
