Atonement in the Old Testament was a temporary faith exercise of sacrifice done by those who believed in God and showed it by offering those sacrifices. These believers have the wisdom of God’s Word and the Presence of God the Holy Spirit in them to grow in His goodness.

Atonement in the New Testament is expressed through metaphors of sacrifice, scapegoat, and redemption to picture the meaning of the death of Christ. Atonement imagery is much less common in the Gospels, possibly appearing in the Lord’s Supper and the ransom saying (Mark 10:45).

It appears only six times in the Old testament with its first appearance in Exodus 30:10. It says, “Aaron shall make atonement on its horns once a year. With the blood of the sin offering of atonement, he shall make atonement for it once in the year throughout your generations. It is most holy to the LORD.”

By his death, which is indeed the one and most true sacrifice offered for us, he purged, abolished and extinguished whatever guilt there was by which the principalities and powers lawfully detained us to pay the penalty. He offered sacrifice for our sins.

The Savior’s atonement takes away the sting of death, because it is no longer permanent. The Savior’s Atonement also enables all those who believe in Him to be saved from sin and receive eternal life. With the Atonement centered on saving us from sin, one might think that it is only about healing us from sin.

As nouns the difference between redemption and atonement is that redemption is the act of redeeming or something redeemed while atonement is a repair done for the sake of a damaged relationship.

Redemption is the act of working towards someone’s forgiveness and when both forgiveness and redemption are working to heal the relationship, our journey to being able to accept someone’s wrongdoing is greatly supported.
