Estivation is one form of dormancy that some animals use to conserve energy under extreme hot and dry conditions. Animals that estivate include lungfish (which estivate for up to three years), earthworms, hedgehogs, snakes, crocodiles, snails, and desert tortoises.

Animals who estivate include the fat-tailed lemur (the first mammal discovered who estivates); many reptiles and amphibians, including the North American desert tortoise, the spotted turtle, the California tiger salamader, and the water-holding frog; certain air-breathing land snails; and some insects, including bees.

Brumation is known as the hibernation for cold-blooded animals. Estivation is when animals are dormant because weather conditions are very hot and dry. Their breathing rate, heart rate and metabolic rate decrease to conserve energy under these harsh conditions. These animals will find a spot to stay cool and shaded.

Aestivation is characterized by inactivity and a lowered metabolic rate, that is entered in response to high temperatures and arid conditions. It takes place during times of heat and dryness, the hot dry season, which are often the summer months.

The following are some of the animals that migrate.

• Hummingbird.
• Canada goose.

To the untrained eye, they do not look as if they are built for endurance, but these birds take the trophy for the longest migration of any animal in the world. Flying from pole to pole, Arctic terns spend most of their year at sea chasing a perpetual summer.

There are several animals that hibernate– skunks, bees, snakes, and groundhogs to name a few– but bears and bats are the most well-known. Bears enter their dens for hibernation based on changes in the weather.

These are all examples of migratory animals. Birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and even insects migrate. Deer, elk, moose, bighorn sheep, and pronghorn are examples of Idaho mammals that migrate. Gopher snakes, rattlesnakes, and other snakes migrate to den sites in the fall.
