Solutions having solute in gaseous state and solvent in liquid state, are called Gas – Liquid Solutions. For example – Solution (mixture) of oxygen in water, mixture of carbon dioxide in water. Coca cola, a beverage, is an example of gas – liquid solution, as it has carbon dioxide dissolved in water.

Air

This is a mixture formed with the combination of a liquid and a gas. An example is Fog (water droplets suspended in air).

There is one phase of matter in a bottle of soda: a liquid phase. Soda is a mixture of water, carbon dioxide gas, and solid sugar. Sugar is dissolved in water, and carbon dioxide is dissolved in water under pressure. At this point, you have two phases: the liquid and the gas bubbles of CO₂.

Some materials are solids, some are liquids, and some are gases, but all materials are made of elements. The air we breathe is a mixture of gases. The gas that makes up most of the air we breathe is… Oxygen makes up about 21% of the air we breathe.

In other words: we inhale, high concentrations of oxygen which then diffuses from the lungs into the blood, while high concentrations of carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the lungs, and we exhale.

Splitting carbon dioxide (CO2) into carbon and oxygen can in fact be accomplished, but there is a catch: doing so requires energy. If energy from coal were applied to drive the decomposition reaction, more CO2 would be released than consumed, because no process is perfectly efficient.

CO2 can be separated from other gases by cooling and condensation. Cryogenic separation is widely used commercially for streams that already have high CO2 concentrations (typically >90%) but it is not used for more dilute CO2 streams.

Leaves, for instance, do an incredible job of converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into oxygen, making a better planet for us all.

In nature, green plants convert atmospheric CO2 and water into glucose and oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. “We call it an artificial leaf because it mimics real leaves and the process of photosynthesis,” he said. “A leaf produces glucose and oxygen. We produce methanol and oxygen.”
