Arrival is based on “Story of Your Life,” a 1998 short story by Ted Chiang, a soft-spoken, 49-year-old technical writer based in Seattle. Louise tells Shang that his wife spoke to her in a dream and told her that “war doesn’t make winners, only widows.” Ian tells her that she can’t stop what’s happening.

Later we learn from Costello that his injuries were fatal (“Abbott is death process”), meaning he sacrificed himself for the cause while still managing to save Ian and Louise.

As Louise vaguely explains with paternal love to Hannah, she told Ian about the choice she made, and he thought she chose wrong. For Ian, watching Hannah die from an incurable disease made their whole marriage, and the whole story of their shared live, unendurable.

Hannah is born, and eventually dies, in a future that hasn’t happened… but one that Louise can “see” and understand because she can now translate heptapod. Despite being gifted with the knowledge that her child would contract a rare disease and die, Louise chooses—as we witness in the final scene—to have a baby with Ian Donnelly, without sharing that tragic knowledge with him.

Arrival is a versatile science fiction film that communicates on many levels. It’s about language and cooperation, about people transcending barriers and immersing themselves in a new culture to understand a foreign race.
