In general, facts are statements that can be proven true or false; by contrast, opinions are matters of belief or ideas that cannot be proven one way or the other. If a statement is a “pure opinion,” it cannot be the basis for a defamation claim.

An opinion is a judgement, viewpoint, or statement that is not conclusive, rather than facts, which are true statements.

Opinion writing is “. . . an elementary type of argument in which students give reasons for their opinions and preferences. 1. Avoid headlines that are questions.
2. Open with a strong first line.
3. You aren’t there just to help.
4. Make the point, qualify it later.
5. Put your best stuff early in the article.
6. Use active and conversational voice.
7. Keep paragraphs self-contained, short but variable.
8. It’s not just about data. Find the story/context in data.

Your opinion essay should have an introduction, main body and conclusion.

1. Step 1 – Introduction. In the introductory paragraph, you need to present your subject and state your opinion clearly.
2. Step 2 – Main Body. In the body of your essay, you need to support your thesis statement.
3. Step 3 – Conclusion.

2.1: Write opinion pieces in which they introduce a topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.

In an opinion paper, you will focus on a topic about which you have personal thoughts, beliefs, or feelings. Your goal is to persuade your reader that your position on this topic is the best one. You won’t accomplish that goal with a rant or diatribe. So, despite its name, an opinion paper will require some research.

1st Person Singular Some say not to use the word I in an essay. Others say it is fine. If you do use it, it is best to use I only in an introduction (and to a lesser extent, the conclusion), rather than in the body of the essay. But use it sparingly; otherwise you can come across as too self-important.
