Layered rocks form when particles settle from water or air. Rock layers are also called strata (the plural form of the Latin word stratum), and stratigraphy is the science of strata.

Clastic sedimentary rocks

Igneous rocks are formed from melted rock deep inside the Earth. Sedimentary rocks are formed from layers of sand, silt, dead plants, and animal skeletons. Metamorphic rocks formed from other rocks that are changed by heat and pressure underground.

Sedimentary rocks have layers because of different depositions of sediments (small broken pieces of rocks) over time. These are your “sediments”. You get a large clear boc, and dump in all of your dirt.

Stone carving is an activity where pieces of rough natural stone are shaped by the controlled removal of stone. Owing to the permanence of the material, stone work has survived which was created during our prehistory or past time. The process of removing stone from the earth is called mining or quarrying.
