The Wain-Roy XLS coupler system design specifically reduces the free play between the coupler and attachments. The design provides the close fit between coupler and attachments to be maintained through simple adjustments with hand tools and periodic shimming.

The Wain-Roy XLS coupler system allows the benefit of fast and efficient changing of excavator buckets and attachments while maintaining close to the manufacturer’s pin-on performance specifications. The first backhoe was introduced after the hydraulic system was developed and the first backhoe swing frame was invented by Vaino J Holopainen and Roy E Handy, Jr. in July 1947. It was patented one year later and the two men came together to start the company Wain-Roy.

In 1948, two Italian brothers, Mario and Carlo Bruneri, designed the prototype of the first mass produced hydraulic excavator. The patent for this design was granted in 1951 but met with limited success.

This engineering innovation was developed by American inventor William Otis in the 1830s.

The first hydraulic wheel loader was invented by Frank G. Hough in the mid-1940s under patents 2,782,946 and 2,726,778. The first Tractor Loader Backhoe was a Wain-Roy backhoe mounted to a Frank G. Hough model “HE” in 1952 in Holden, Massachusetts, USA, for the Holden Water Department.

The term “backhoe” can be confusing because the digging bucket is actually on the front of the machine. But the backhoe’s name actually refers to the way that the machine digs by pulling earth toward itself, or backward, rather than pushing it forward like a traditional shovel.

Every machine is different! Pin centres and ear widths often differ between machine makes and models, so most of the time excavator buckets are not universal. Sometimes, there are exceptions with machines that happen to have the same (or very similar) pickup specs.
