Male blue crabs are usually referred to as “Jimmy Crabs,” immature female crabs are called “she crabs” or “Sally” crabs, and mature females are called “sooks”. Males can be distinguished from females by the apron on its abdomen.

The species in this group include frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts. All can breathe and absorb water through their very thin skin. Amphibians also have special skin glands that produce useful proteins.

Although crabs can live on land and in water,but they are not amphibians. Crabs have different body features than amphibians. They do not have lungs like amphibians. They donot have vertebral colomn like amphibians.

Crabs are decapod crustaceans which have a very short tail and are covered with a thick shell, or exoskeleton and are armed with a single pair of claws. Crabs are invertebrates (animals without a backbone).

Most of the toxic crabs belong to a genus called “Xanthidae,” a family of crabs known as mud crabs, pebble crabs or rubble crabs.

The world’s largest recorded crab is the Japanese spider crab, a species which can grow to around 12ft and weigh up to three stone.

Whenever they had to dive to the bottom of the ocean, they feared that the giant crab would swallow them alive. There is nothing to fear about however as they are pretty much incapable of harming a human being. Their long legs are only able to kill small sea creatures and their claws to open mussels or shells.

Many different types of bait are used for crabbing: turkey, chicken, mink, fish carcass, shad, herring, clams, etc. Fresh bait is best. There are many ways to secure your bait inside of your crab gear. As long as the bait stays inside of your crab gear when crabbing, and the crabs can get to it, most methods will work.

Killing the crab prior to cooking is humane and instantaneous, but it also avoids the crab from shedding limbs through shock, which often happens when boiling alive. The stress of placing the crab in the boiling water alive can make the flesh tough.

Snails, lobsters and spiders actually have blue blood (properly called haemolymph). The colour comes from the copper atoms in the haemocyanin molecule, which is blue when it is carrying an oxygen atom.
