Bulldozers are used for shallow digging and ditching; short-range transportation of material; spreading soil dumped from trucks; rough grading; removing trees, stumps, and boulders; and cleaning and leveling around loading equipment.

Use a 16 or 20 foot long 3/8 inch Grade 70 chain with hooks on the ends. Wrap the chain around the piece of wood near each end and then hook the chain hooks onto the outer edge of the tracks. Then put the machine in reverse and see what happens. If all goes well, the machine should climb backwards out of the hole.

Swamp Dozers The only major difference between a tracked dozer and a swamp dozer is the size of the tracks. This makes them perfect for swampy or sandy areas where a wheeled or normal tracked dozer or other vehicle would get bogged.

Tips to Get Heavy Equipment Out of the Mud

1. Always carry a strap, rope, chain or cable.
2. Unload the stuck vehicle.
3. Attach to a tow hook or frame.
4. Insert hooks tips-up.
5. Only use two attachment points.
6. Tow slowly.

If you have tried to back out and failed, try digging the mud away from behind the front and rear wheels. Dig far enough so if you get the tractor moving in reverse, you can continue to back out and build up momentum. Place boards behind the wheels to provide a solid base, and try to back out slowly.

Tracks Suit Difficult Terrain While wheels excel in ideal, flat conditions, tracks love a challenge. Skid steers with tracks make light work of difficult surfaces such as muddy, sandy, and snowy ground. They’ll also do well in wet and uneven ground that wheels alone can’t handle.

1. Attach the 20-foot high-test chain to the skid steer’s cage frame. Attach the chain to the bucket of a front-end loader or track-hoe and lift the skid steer.
2. Remove the drive chains using your socket set, breaking bar and pry bar.
3. Remove the skid steer’s driveshaft.

Skid steers are notoriously tough on the terrain. It’s easy to tear up the ground in very little time. Skid steers don’t have a suspension, so holes and ruts in the ground make for an extremely rough ride. Take the time to occasionally smooth out your work area—your back will thank you.
