Direction is the pathway along which an object is moving. Direction is also the location of a feature based on the position of another feature.

It’s compass. latitude and longitude are for coordinates.

A compass rose indicates direction on a map.

The two most important tools geographers use are maps and globes.

The seven geographical concepts of place, space, environment, interconnection, sustainability, scale and change are the key to understanding the places that make up our world. These are different from the content-based concepts such as weather, climate, mega cities and landscapes.

In VCE Geography, the ten key geographical concepts are: place, scale, distance, distribution, movement, region, change, process, spatial association and sustainability.

The five skill sets are as follows:

• Asking Geographic Questions.
• Acquiring Geographic Information.
• Organizing Geographic Information.
• Analyzing Geographic Information.
• Answering Geographic Questions.

What makes the scientific discipline of geography different from other science disciplines is its emphasis on space, place, and connection. The technology geographers and other scientists use to study the physical and cultural environments spatially and over time is with geospatial technology.

The primary objective of Geographical Research is to advance innovative and high-quality work that demonstrates the strengths and diversity of all parts of discipline, and in this endeavour it also supports scholarship from the Institute’s several Study Groups.

At local and regional scales, geographers assist decision makers by providing information and analyses related to such issues as the management of hazards, management of complex urban systems, and resource allocation, often wrestling with their overlapping roles as scientists and citizens.
