Phase 10 Southwest:

2s and 3s remain “draw 2” and “draw 3” cards. Jokers are like 2s and 3s, but with a twist, they are wild cards and may be placed regardless of suit, that is, the player following the one who draws cards as a result of the Joker being played may play any card regardless of suit.

Increase the cards in each round by one card. So for the second hand each player will draw 4 cards instead of 3, and place one card face up to their left. In the third hand they will draw a 5 card hand and place one face up, and so on up to 13. The second hand of 4 cards requires a match or sequence of 4 cards.

Hands

The entire phase must be played at once, so if the player is on the 1st phase, they must play 2 sets of 3 cards at once. Players cannot lay down a partial phase.

The first player to complete Phase 10 will always have the lowest score. In the event of a tie (when two or more players have completed Phase 10), the winner is also the player with the lowest score. If the scores are the same and it’s still a tie, the tied players replay a hand and try to complete Phase 10 again.

The players play 10 hands. All players advance to the next Phase each time, whether they complete the current Phase or not. Thus, in hand one players try for Phase 1, then in hand two they all try for Phase 2, etc. After ten hands, the player with the lowest total score is the winner.

Skip cards cannot be used as a part of a phase, and they cannot be picked up from the discard pile.

Strategy and Tips

1. The key in Phase 10 strategy is to play out as many cards as possible.
2. Don’t give up.
3. Hit on completed sets whenever possible.
4. Remember you can play cards on your opponent’s sets and sequences.
5. Remember that you can take the top of the discard pile if it is a card you need.

This game is inspired by Phase 10, a commercial version of Contract Rummy, but is played with normal playing cards. To begin, deal each player 10 cards and flip one card face up. The object of the game is to complete each “phase”.

Phase 10 contains 2 rule cards; 6 wild; 4 skip; 8 each of 4 colors – from 1 to 12 – they don’t really have much in common! No, UNO cards are different from Phase 10, you can’t use them to play this game.

Equipment: Phase 10 Masters Edition deck consisting of: 40 “Phase” cards, and 24 each of red, orange, yellow, and green cards numbered “1” through “12”, and two “Skip” cards, and twelve “Wild” cards. Game Set-up: Each player is given 10 “Phase” cards 1 each of all ten phases.

Two Player Hearts Two people may play Hearts with an alteration to the deck. In Two Player Hearts, 3’s, 5’s, 7’s, 9’s, Jacks, and, Kings are removed from the deck, leaving 13 cards to be dealt to each player. All general rules remain the same.

Aces are the best cards to pass to the left. The reason for this is that aces are the most likely cards to win tricks, and you want the player to your left to win tricks. If she does, she will lead the next trick, allowing you to play last in the trick, so you can see exactly what to play.

Hearts is played with a standard 52-card deck, 2 through Ace of each suit. The entire deck is dealt giving each of the four players 13 cards. Ace is high and there is no trump suit. When played with 3 players, the 2 of Diamonds is omitted from the deck, resulting in 51 cards.

You can not play a Heart or a Queen of Spades on the first trick, even if you don’t have any Clubs. You cannot lead a Heart, before “Breaking Hearts” occurs.

EXCEPTION: (Hearts and the Queen of Spades cannot be played on the first hand and they cannot be led until a heart or the Queen of Spades has been discarded on a trick.) A trick is won by the highest card played on the suit led. The winner of a trick leads next.

If you allow shooting the moon, you generally don’t need to take the Jack of Diamonds to shoot the moon, but some versions of the game require that you win this card, too. Implementing the rule about the Jack of Diamonds influences which cards you decide to pass on.

Shooting the moon is when you want to win all the hearts and the Queen of spades. If you succeed, you gain no points that round and every other player gains 26 points (in some circles, you have an option to instead take 26 points off your score).

If you try to shoot the moon and miss by a single heart, you will instead gain 25 points. If you’re at 75 points or more, then this will end the game with you in the last place.

Every heart taken in a trick is one point. In addition, the queen of spades (also called the “Black Lady”) carries 13 points. In a common variation, the jack of diamonds subtracts ten points (although this is not a universal rule).

Jack of clubs means a good friend and sincere lover. He is a slightly dangerous flatterer, friendly, enterprising, skillful and brave young man. For a man, jack of clubs means a more successful and wealthier rival. This card also signifies education and intelligence.

Isolated, the Jack of Diamonds represents the Messenger. This card also symbolizes an unfaithful assistant or employee. The Jack of diamonds is a young man who comes and goes, and takes more than is allowed. This card is a sign that you will be dealing with an intelligent man, who is very untrustworthy.

Scoring. Many people play that the Jack of Diamonds (or sometimes the Ten of Diamonds) is a bonus card, counting minus 10 points for the person taking it. With this form of scoring, the game is known as Omnibus Hearts.
