The hot air balloon consists of three parts: envelope, basket, and burner system.

The basket is the bottom part of the balloon. It carries the passengers, pilot and propane gas cylinders. Baskets come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, some smaller for the more intimate flights for 2-3 people, right through to the larger sizes (20+) used for public flights.

Baskets are commonly made of woven wicker or rattan. These materials have proven to be sufficiently light, strong, and durable for balloon flight. Such baskets are usually rectangular or triangular in shape. They vary in size from just big enough for two people to large enough to carry thirty.

From a statistical point (The Aviation Accident Database), the FAA finds that hot air ballooning is the safest form of all air travel and rarely involved in aviation crashes. In fact, the FAA has found that you are more likely to be injured driving a car than flying in an airplane or hot air balloon!

Many people think they would not enjoy a hot air balloon ride because they are afraid of heights. In fact, ballooning offers an opportunity to experience heights without fear. Because the balloon travels with the wind, you feel no wind against your face– it is a supremely peaceful experience!

Should we tip our balloon pilot and chase crew? Like all service providers, a gratuity is always appreciated. A typical tip would be 10-20% of the total price. Like the saying: If you like the ride, tip your guide.

The temperature difference between inside and outside the balloon envelope determines the lift of a balloon, so balloons can fly well in cold weather. However, if the liquid propane in the fuel tanks is too cold it may become too cold for the propane to work.
