Born in 1883, he grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, and attended an all-black public elementary school. His father died when he was four years old, and his mother worked as a teacher to support her family. Just helped out by working in the fields after school.

At Dartmouth, Just studied biology, history, literature, and the classics. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1907, the only “magna cum laude” in his class, with an AB degree and joined the English faculty at Howard University, Washington, DC in the fall of that same year.

He discovered that a “wave of negativity” sweeps over the egg during fertilization; it is a wave of ectoplasmic structural change that blocks additional sperm from binding to the egg surface, and it is associated with what is known as the fast block to polyspermy.

In 1940, the German Nazis imprisoned Just in a camp, but, with the help of his wife’s father, he was released. Earnest Just died of pancreatic cancer in Washington, D.C., on October 27, 1941. He is buried at the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Suitland, Maryland.

Marine biology

Ernest Just’s two older siblings died from the diseases. He, a baby not yet four months, was somehow spared. His parents, Charles Fraser Just and Mary Matthew Just were among those who did not have adequate health care. Ernest Just was born on August 13, 1883.

Marine Biologist. Ernest E. Just, a zoologist who specialized in cytology (the study of the cell), is best know for his contributions to marine biology. His studies of fertilization and of the fundamental role of the cell surface in the development of organisms won international acclaim.

Marine biologists must complete at least a bachelor’s degree, which takes about four years. Marine biologists who pursue master’s degrees may take an additional two to three years to complete their education, and earning a PhD will take up to six years more.

It is a long and arduous journey to becoming a respectable marine biologist. In order to take up a marine biologist career, one needs to choose subjects such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry and of course – biology during your undergrad years.

Any math skills that are necessary for basic biology and chemistry are necessary for marine biology. Marine biologists often use algebra and trigonometry to establish measurements.
