If the resistor shorts or fails, it may cause the blower motor to remain stuck on one fan speed. The heating and air conditioning systems may still function at one speed, however the resistor will have to be replaced in order for full functionality to be restored.

How to Replace a Blower Motor Resistor

1. Remove the negative battery terminal.
2. Locate the blower motor resistor on the passenger side under the dash board.
3. Disconnect the electrical connector to the blower motor resistor.
4. Remove the screws or bolts to the blower motor resistor and remove the resistor.

In most cases, a blower motor resistor fails due to corrosion or overheating. Sometimes, the mechanical resistance to the motor rotation causes an excessive electric current that can overheat and prematurely damage the blower motor resistor.

When your air conditioner’s fan motor breaks, it will typically cost about $300 to $600 to replace. If you find any damage, you should replace it now. Most Murray blower motors come with the plastic blower wheel included (as shown in the picture). Reinstall the motor into the climate control unit. Once it’s secure, reconnect the wires.

LISTEN TO YOUR AIR HANDLER. If your air handler is running but not blowing air, there are two likely scenarios; either a broken AC blower belt or an issue with the motor itself. If the motor is running, but it is not moving any air, then you’ll want to look to see if the blower belt is broken.

The blower motor is powered by a fuse-like device called a relay. If your heater or air conditioner does not blow air through the vents, this could indicate that the blower motor fuse has probably blown. Use voltmeter or ohmmeter to check for a blown fuse. If you find one, replace it. Start car and see if blower motor works. If fuse blows again, check for loose circuits.
