After an eruption, roofs on buildings may collapse and kill people if enough volcanic ash particles land on them. People can develop breathing problems, throat irritation and other respiratory issues when ash falls after a volcanic eruption.

Tungurahua is one of South America’s most active volcanoes. Since 2000, a new lava dome has been growing in its summit crater. Tungurahua’s activity has been characterized by frequent powerful ash explosions, producing ash plumes of several kilometers height as well as dangerous pyroclastic flows.

However, wind can quickly blow fine ash away from the volcano to form an eruption cloud. As the cloud drifts downwind from the erupting volcano, the ash that falls from the cloud typically becomes smaller in size and forms a thinner layer. Ash clouds can travel thousands of miles, and some even circle the Earth.

In theory, there is no limit on the number of volcanoes that could erupt at once other than the number of active volcanoes themselves: while it is thus theoretically thinkable, that all 600 volcanoes (on land) known to have had eruptions during recorded history erupt at once, this is so unlikely that it can be excluded …

When a volcano erupts, the molten rock (or magma) that comes out of the Earth is called lava. Because lava is so hot (more than 1,100 degrees C, over 2,000 degrees F), it remains molten and flows across the ground until it cools and hardens into rock.

Dry lava is called igneous rock. The superheated molten rock that reaches the surface in an eruption is called lava, and lava may flow for miles before coo.

Lava eruptions can be “fire fountains” of liquid rock or thick, slow-moving rivers of molten material. Lava cools to form volcanic rock as well as volcanic glass. Magma can also extrude into Earth’s atmosphere as part of a violent volcanic explosion. This magma solidifies in the air to form volcanic rock called tephra.

The belief that Pele, the volcano goddess of Hawaii’s Big Island, brings bad luck to those who take lava prompts hundreds of people to return rocks each year; ‘we’re very sorry.

You can usually find a good selection of lava rocks for most of your needs. If you need small rocks, like for aquariums or terrariums, then consider shopping at a pet store. You can find the smaller lava rocks at a pet shop.

HAWAII (CBS) – Tourism officials in Hawaii are reminding visitors not to take lava rocks home with them. Taking things from National Parks is against the law, so taking volcanic rocks from Hawaii’s volcanoes is illegal.
