None is known to have developed either syphilis or tuberculosis. His sisters died of unknown cause at ages 65 and 68 years (7), and his brother was lost at sea at age 30 years (4).

Simón Bolívar was a Venezuelan soldier and statesman who played a central role in the South American independence movement. Bolívar served as president of Gran Colombia (1819–30) and as dictator of Peru (1823–26).

On December 17, 1830, however, Simón Bolívar died in Santa Marta, Colombia, after a battle with what may have been tuberculosis. Today, Bolívar’s legacy can be seen in the multitude of statues and plaza squares bearing his likeness throughout South and North America.

A rebel army of about 3,000 men under generals Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Paula Santander first surprised and defeated the Spaniards in preliminary engagements at Gámeza (July 12) and Pantano de Vargas (July 25) and captured Tunja on August 5.

From 1830 to 1856, the country was known as New Granada, and from 1856 to 1863, it was known as the Grenadine Confederation. The country became the United States of Colombia in 1863, and it changed its name to the Republic of Colombia in 1886. Panama separated from Colombia in 1903.

The earliest known inhabitants of Colombia were Mesoamericans who migrated from the north and later Arawak people arrived from the south. The Inca Empire arose in the early 13th century and by the early 14th century had incorporated some parts of modern day Colombia.

“Most of them still living in the towns of San Sebastian and San Jeronimo, Cusco, Peru, at present, are probably the most homogeneous group of Inca lineage,” says Elward. “It is also remarkable that in these contemporary Inca nobility families, there is a continuity since pre-Columbian times,” says Ronald Elward.

American Indians, or indigenous peoples of Colombia, are the ethnic groups who have been in Colombia prior to the Europeans in the early 16th century. Known as pueblos indígenas in Spanish, they comprise 3.4% of the country’s population and belong to 87 different tribes.

Most Colombians of European descent are primarily descended from Spanish settlers, while other Europeans arrived during the 19th and 20th centuries.

For example, Mexicans, Argentinians, Colombians, among others are considered Hispanics. They can also be considered Latinos, as they are each part of a Latin American country. And, as Mexico is a Latin American country, its people can be regarded as Latinos as well.

Florida (1.03 million in 2017) has the highest concentration of Colombian Americans in the U.S., standing out in part because of its proximity to Colombia, followed by New York (503,128), New Jersey (238,551), California (115,392) and Texas (105,929).

Most of the population (over 86 percent) is either mestizo (having both Amerindian and white ancestry) or white. People of African (10.4 percent) and indigenous or Amerindian (over 3.4 percent) origin make up the rest of the Colombian population.

Colombia has received across its history different groups of immigrants. White Colombians are mainly of Spanish descent, who arrived in the beginning of the 16th century when Colombia was part of the Spanish Empire.

White Colombians are the Colombian descendants of European people. According to the 2005 Census 85% of Colombians do not identify with any ethnic group, thus being either White or Mestizo, which are not categorized separately.

A Paisa is someone from a region in the northwest of Colombia, including the part of the Andes in Colombia. The Paisa region is formed by the departments of Antioquia, Caldas, Risaralda and Quindío. Some regions of Valle del Cauca Department (north) and Tolima Department (west) culturally identify as paisas.

The singer credited this to her mixed ethnicity, saying: “I am a fusion. That’s my persona. I’m a fusion between black and white, between pop and rock, between cultures – between my Lebanese father and my mother’s Spanish blood, the Colombian folklore and Arab dance I love and American music.”

Shakira’s iconic belly dancing is a reference to her Lebanese heritage. Shakira once told Rolling Stone that she was eating in a Middle Eastern restaurant with her father when she first heard the doumbek drum and fell for belly dancing.
