Bonanza: Michael Landon selected a beautiful Paint horse for his new mount, in the show he is called Cochise, named after the famous Indian. He stood 15. 3 hands high and weighed 1,150 pounds.

Q: On “Bonanza,” why did Michael Landon have so many different Paint horses, at least four, and sometimes two in one episode? A: According to several “Bonanza” websites, Landon — who played Little Joe on the long-running western — had more than a dozen horses playing his mount over the course of the show.

None of the three wives were around long enough to see their children grow up: Elizabeth died in childbirth, Inger Borgstrom was shot by an Indian with an arrow when Hoss was only a few weeks old, and Marie fell off of a horse and was killed when Joe was only five.

The real Ponderosa Ranch, a sprawling 24-acre property in Nevada, looks a little different today. And it just sold for $38 million. Realtor.com reported that the home’s high selling price makes it the most expensive waterfront home sold on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe.

The “Adam Cartwright” role was a transition to TV for the actor, who never adapted to the routines of a network-television series. Roberts disliked the treatment of “Adam,” a grown man kept under the thumb of his father (Lorne Green), and felt constricted by the lack of range in his character.

Little Joe got married in an episode called “Forever,” which aired Sept. 12, 1972. By the end of the show he was a widower.

Only weeks before the thirteenth season finale of Bonanza, Dan Blocker, who had begun to suffer from some ill health, died suddenly from a post-operative pulmonary embolism. According to Distractify, Blocker’s death was a major blow to the cast and crew of Bonanza for several reasons.

1. The TV show inspired a restaurant chain. The restaurants, which were owned by Bonanza star Dan Blocker, who played Eric “Hoss” Cartwright, were initially called — believe it or not — Bonanza. After he sold the chain, the name changed to Ponderosa, and, like a wagon train, the restaurant just kept on going forward.
