16th century Japan was an era of civil strife between warlords for control of the nation, but the most significant event came in 1543 when Europeans (Portuguese) arrived for the first time. Their arrival would have unforeseen consequences.

Japan in the 1500s is locked in a century of decentralized power and incessant warfare among competing feudal lords, a period known as the “Sengoku,” or “Country at War” (1467-1573).

The medieval period of Japan is considered by most historians to stretch from 1185 to 1603 CE. The country witnessed long periods of civil wars as warlords and large estate owners (daimyo) fought for prominence and the central government struggled to unify Japan.

Although legend has it that Japan was founded in 660BC, archaeologists agree that settlement in the Japanese archpelago dates back as far as 100,000 years. The Jomon Period (8000-c. 300BC) is the earliest that has been studied. It is named after the ‘jomon’ or cord-marked pattern style of pottery of the period.

In fact, the largest tsunami wave ever recorded broke on a cool July night in 1958 and only claimed five lives. A 1,720 foot tsunami towered over Lituya Bay, a quiet fjord in Alaska, after an earthquake rumbled 13 miles away.
