Lake Michigan is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. It is the second-largest of the Great Lakes by volume (1,180 cu mi (4,900 km3)) and the third-largest by surface area (22,404 sq mi (58,030 km2)), after Lake Superior and Lake Huron….

The Great Lakes hold one–fifth of the world’s fresh water and Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan and Lake Superior waters are critical for those who live along them and for the state’s economy, environment and quality of life.

The state borders Lake Superior and Michigan to the north, Lake Michigan to the east, and Illinois to the south.

In 2007, underwater archeologist Mark Holley was scanning for shipwrecks on the bottom of Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay. Instead, he stumbled on a line of stones thought to be constructed by ancient humans — including one stone with what appeared to be a carving of a mastodon.

People out fishing early Tuesday found a body in Lake Michigan east of the East Side neighborhood, officials said. The Chicago police marine unit recovered the body, believed to be a man in his 50s, from Lake Michigan after someone saw something floating in the water east of 95th Street, according to police.

Many people who’ve spent much time around the Great Lakes take for granted that Lake Superior is the largest, coldest and clearest of the lakes. Over that period, they found, the depth that light could penetrate down into the water — known as the photic zone — increased by about 20 percent in lakes Michigan and Huron.

August is the month with the warmest water temperature at 65.1°F / 18.4°C. The month with the coldest is March with an average water temperature of 32.4°F / 0.2°C. Throughout the year, the water temperature of lake superior averages at 40 degrees Farenheit.
