Many catfish anglers have used them for decades. On the other hand, most catfish anglers seem to discover hot dogs out of desperation, after running out of traditional fishing baits such as worms and cut baits. Hot dogs are a common food taken along on fishing excursions and double as excellent catfish bait.

No problem. Raw hot dogs, bacon, or chicken wings work well enough for a line or trap fishing, and they’re all you really need for goofing off among the rocks. There’s only one bait rule, and it can’t be broken: Never use spoiled food. The crawdads will shoot you down.

Use the twig to push the string through a piece of hotdog and tie a knot. Fill the bucket with water so that you have a place to put your catch. Then, dip the hotdog into the water next to a big rock in the water while holding the end of the string and wait while being very quiet and very still.

The best bait for crawfish is fish such as shiners, herring, sunfish, pogies and gizzard shad. Some fishermen prefer to use cut up salmon heads and other oily fish they can get their hands on.

Crawfish (also called crawdads, crayfish, stonecrabs and mud-bugs) can be boiled for a delicious treat or eaten raw (ideally with salt) as a high-protein survival food. These small, edible crustaceans are widely distributed in the U.S and around the world.

Everyone in Louisiana peels their crawfish differently. But there is one sure fire way of removing the crawfish’s vein (or as us Louisianans call it, the poop line) from the body. So in this 30 second video we show you how to quickly devein a boiled crawfish before you pull the head from the tail.

Procedure: chilling in air

1. Place the crustaceans in a freezer. Regularly check them for signs of insensibility (see ‘Signs of insensibility’).
2. Once the crustaceans are showing signs of insensibility, mechanically kill them as soon as possible to ensure that they do not recover.

Crawfish, crayfish, and crawdads are the same animal. Louisianans most often say crawfish, whereas Northerners are more likely to say crayfish. People from the West Coast or Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas often use the term crawdad.

“I learned from a book that crawdads don’t really sing. With her then-husband Mark Owens, they made a name for themselves in the wild, writing three books together about their experiences with elephants and lions, even appearing in a 1988 National Geographic documentary, “African Odyssey.”

And why was he killed? Yes, Kya was responsible for the death of Chase Andrews. Basically, at the end of the book, we find out that Kya has been writing and publishing poems under a pen name. Tate, her husband, finds one of these poems (that Kya wrote) along with the necklace that ties Kya to the murder.

Most adult crayfish are about 7.5 cm (3 inches) long. Among the smallest is the 2.5-cm-long Cambarellus diminutus of the southeastern United States. Among the largest is Astacopsis gouldi of Tasmania, which may reach 40 cm in length and weigh about 3.5 kg (8 pounds).

The marsh symbolizes self-reliance and symbiosis with nature. After Kya’s family abandons her in the shack in the swamp, Kya decides to make a life for herself there. She loves exploring and learning about the plants and animals of the swamp, and she lives a general isolated life.
