Years ago, motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) sold his soul to save the life of a loved one. Now, he transforms into a fiery, avenging agent of justice at night wherever evil roams. As the only one who can walk in both worlds, Johnny is charged by Mephistopheles (Donal Logue) himself to destroy Blackheart (Wes Bentley), a demon that wants to overthrow Mephistopheles and create a worse hell than the one that currently exists.

It’s all pretty underwhelming. The effects aren’t bad, and there’s a certain wicked joy in seeing Ghost Rider in action. However, the plot is boring and potentially great moments like seeing Johnny team up with The Caretaker – the original Ghost Rider – are wasted.

Instead of a dark, troubled spirit of vengeance we see in the comics, the film presents the Ghost Rider as a funny, deranged spirit of comedy. “The Ghost Rider” moves in an eccentric, yet malevolent way that makes you laugh but also cringe at the same time. Most actions the Ghost Rider makes are bizarre and awkward.

While it’s easy for Ghost Rider to use his Penance Stare to defeat villains, with heroes it’s more complicated than that. Ghost Rider’s main weakness is that he can be defeated by any weapon forged in Heaven or Hell, and DC has quite a few religious artifacts that could do the trick.
