A Fishful of Dollars

This blog is a review of the Season 1 episode of Futurama entitled A Fishful of Dollars. In the episode, Fry becomes rich and gains 4.3 billion dollars after discovering that over the course of the thousand years he has been frozen that his account had grown a large amount of interest per year.

In the sixth episode, ‘A Fishful of Dollars’, Fry re-discovers his old bank account. At the time he was frozen, this contained the princely sum of 93 cents. After 1000 years spent as a human popsicle, he learns that the balance has compounded from less than a buck to the staggering sum of $4.3 billion.

Professor Farnsworth is one of six living relatives of Philip J. Fry, together with his own clone, Cubert J. Farnsworth, as well as his only son by means of his sexual relations with Carol Miller while he worked for her, Igner. He is Fry’s nephew thirty times over.

$4.3 billion dollars may seem a ludicrous amount for Fry’s bank account, but it is correct. Starting with 93 cents, compound interest of 2.25% over 1000 years comes to exactly $4,283,508,449.71.

Seymour at Panucci’s Pizza, on 31 December 1999. Seymour Asses, or Seymour for short, was Fry’s dog before he was frozen. For the rest of his life, Seymour sat outside Panucci’s Pizza waiting for the return of his master, as the world around him changed and, eventually, he died in front of the abandoned pizza shop.

Fry’s Electronics announced on its website it has shut down operations and closed all 31 of its stores after 36 years, citing “changes in the retail industry and the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.” The company’s full website has been pulled down, replaced only with a message detailing the chain’s closure.

This was answered during the 4th season in episode 10 that Nibbler calls in the order and then pushes Fry into the cryo chamber. In the fourth season it was revealed that Nibbler called in the pizza using the name ‘I.C. Wiener’. It was a trap placed for Fry so that Nibbler can push him into the machine.

Circuit City announced in January 2009 that it was going out of business and liquidating stores. The final day of operation was March 8, 2009. On August 22, 2018, Circuit City officially relaunched the brand name as an online retailer and announced plans to begin operating a “stores within stores” chain.

Fry’s Food and Drug is a chain of supermarkets that has a major presence in the U.S. state of Arizona. Fry’s also operates under the banner of Fry’s Marketplace, a combination of groceries and general merchandise comparable to a Wal-Mart Supercenter. Fry’s is a division of Cincinnati, Ohio-based Kroger.

Fry’s Electronics is actually not owned by a single individual. It is co-owned by three brothers — CEO John Fry, William Randolph “Randy” Fry and David Fry, along with John Fry’s former girlfriend Kathryn Kolder.
