Sometimes the face of a carved or painted sphinx was meant to resemble a particular pharaoh. In Greek mythology, the Sphinx was a monster.

The existence of man-made chambers and tunnels below the Sphinx are debated. American clairvoyant Edgar Cayce, who died in 1945, famously claimed that an ancient library was hidden below the statue. Zahi Hawass claims to have rediscovered access tunnels to several large and seemingly natural caves below the Sphinx

Entering the Pyramids Tourists are allowed to enter all three of the great pyramids, for a fee, of course. That is, you can go into the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure as long as you pay for a ticket

You can go inside both the Great Pyramid (Khufu) and Khafre for an extra fee (400EGP for Khufu and 100EGP for Khafre). There are some that say it is not worth going inside, as there is nothing to see, but personally, I think it is about the experience

The short answer: Yes, it is safe to travel to Cairo. In fact, there may not be a better time to travel to Cairo. But whenever you travel, especially abroad, you should take some precautions

Many Egyptians don’t drink alcohol in accordance with Islamic traditions, but locally brewed beer is served in higher-end and tourist-orientated restaurants. Drinking on the street is taboo, as is public drunkenness.

In short, Americans and other visitors can rest easy: yes, Egypt is a safe country for tourists

So, is it safe to visit the Pyramids in Egypt? Probably, but stick to one very important golden rule: Don’t ever talk to the locals! And never tell them where you are from. It might sound a bit crass, but it’s the only thing that will prevent you from getting scammed – especially around the pyramids (read my guide)

4. One pair of long trousers.
5. A veil/shawl (women only; you can buy it at most souvenir shops as well)
