These maps are termed seven and a half minute quadrangles because each map covers a rectangular area of land surface equal to 7.5 minutes of longitude in width (about 7.5 miles) and 7.5 minutes of latitude in height (8.5 miles). The actual paper quadrangle maps are about 23 inches wide by 27 inches high.
