Ozone protects life on Earth from the Sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In the lower atmosphere (the troposphere) near the Earth’s surface, ozone is created by chemical reactions between air pollutants from vehicle exhaust, gasoline vapors, and other emissions.

Stratospheric ozone forms naturally and helps shield us from ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight that can cause sunburn and skin cancer. Ozone in the stratosphere forms when a photon of ultraviolet “light” from the Sun strikes a normal oxygen molecule, breaking it apart.

Ozone generators commonly used in ‘high ozone shock treatments’ are used to eliminate mold contamination, second-hand smoke, and odors. In controlled laboratory studies at CleanZone Systems, high levels of ozone have been shown to kill a variety of insects including bed bugs.

Tiny traces of ozone in the air will attack double bonds in rubber chains, with natural rubber, polybutadiene, styrene-butadiene rubber and nitrile rubber being most sensitive to degradation. Every repeat unit in the first three materials has a double bond, so every unit can be degraded by ozone.

Vinegar is safe to clean your CPAP supplies with, but won’t remove any buildup. It actually helps to use a vinegar solution of 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water once a month to really disinfect your equipment like your mask and tubing. Allow each part to soak in the vinegar solution for about 30 minutes.
