Unclog the plughole A blockage, even if it’s just partial, is not just inconvenient, but creates a breeding ground for bacteria – and nobody wants that in the kitchen. How to sort it out? Mrs Hinch revealed to The Sun that her solution to a blocked plughole is to use soda crystals, followed by white vinegar.

Epsom salt is an ionic compound. There is a positive magnesium ion (Mg2+) and a negative sulfate ion (SO42−). Polar water interacts with these oppositely charged ions to dissolve the Epsom salt. MSG is made of a positive sodium ion (Na+) and a negative glutamate ion, which has the molecular formula (C5H8NO4−).

For difficult stains, it can be worth using both methods together. To clean stains with soda crystals, first, make a paste by mixing it with water. If soda crystals alone aren’t enough to clean a stubborn stain, you can treat the stain a second time with a solution of white vinegar.

Soda crystals are sodium carbonate decahydrate, which is chemically similar to baking soda but not the same. Soda crystals are more alkaline than baking soda, so they are better for removing stains and grease.

Nasty niffs can also linger around kitchen bins. To help combat the stink, regularly wash the bin and any recycling containers with a Soda Crystals solution. The physical properties of Bicarbonate of Soda means that it actually absorbs smells, rather than simply masking them.

Simply add 1–2 teaspoons of water to 3 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda to form a thick paste, and add this to the detergent drawer. Next, tip 250ml of white vinegar into the drum, then run your washing machine on a 60°C cycle.
