Piggy’s glasses are symbolic for a number of reasons in Lord of the Flies. Jack snatches the glasses off Piggy’s face to create the fire, despite Piggy’s protestations, and his dependence upon them. Later, Jack punches Piggy which cause the glasses to fall, smashing one side.

The irony of the dead parachutist is that he represents the world of adults. But, hey, he’s dead as a result of war caused by adults. War is chaos. Chaos is coming to the island because the boys cannot agree and be civilized.

Sam and Eric Timeline and Summary Sam and Eric are tending the fire when they see “the beast,” which we all know is actually a dead parachuting man. Once Jack has announced his feast, Sam and Eric are the only boys left with Piggy, Ralph, and Simon.

What do Sam and Eric see in the middle of the night while on fire duty, and why does it frighten them? They see the figure that had appeared from the sky, the parachuter. The twins say that ‘the beast’ had claws, and that it followed and nearly touched them.

Simon tells Ralph that he will get back to reassure him that he will get back home. Ralph always fears the ocean. He views it as a barrier from being rescued. They have intensified their own fears with their imaginations.

In Chapter 7 of Lord of the Flies, Simon goes off alone to alert Piggy that they would be returning after dark.

In The Lord of the Flies, Simon learns that the beast the children on the island fear is actually a dead paratrooper and his parachute. When he tries to bring his new knowledge to the other boys, he is murdered by them in a ritualistic style. This is because the children follow him for protection from the beast.
