The personality of Ichabod Crane also reflects the status of the American nation in his want for maturity. Crane, although a grown man, displays certain qualities of youth in his superstitious beliefs and his “his appetite for the marvelous, and his powers of digesting it, [which] were equally extraordinary” (969).

The moral of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is not to let superstition guide your actions and overwhelm your reason.

To subsidize his meager earnings as a schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane has a second job teaching singing lessons. He takes great pride in his singing voice, and is eager to display it at church each week. He teaches psalmody to local young people, for which he is paid in shillings.

Ichabod’s behavior with his students is best described in this paragraph: he administered justice with discrimination rather than severity; taking the burden off the backs of the weak, and laying it on those of the strong.

At the end of Washington Irving’s “Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” Ichabod Crane disappears after he is frightened by the headless horsemen. A search turns up the saddle of Ichabod’s horse, his hat, and a pumpkin. The old women of the town believe that Ichabod has been “spirited away by supernatural means.”

Ichabod wants to marry her so he can inherit her land, wealth, and so she can she can cook for him. He feels this way because he is courting and wants to marry katrina. He tells ichabod to back off.

The primary conflict in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” is that between Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones over Katrina Van Tassel, whom they’re both determined to marry. This conflict will only be resolved when one man or the other finally becomes the undisputed favorite to make Katrina his bride.

The opposing force created, the conflict within the story generally comes in four basic types: Conflict with the self, Conflict with others, Conflict with the environment and Conflict with the supernatural.

The clearest conflict in the story is between Ichabod Crane and his love rival, Brom Bones. Each man are determined to make the eligible Dutch heiress Katrina Van Tassel his wife. But as only one man can win her hand in marriage, it’s inevitable that there will be some kind of conflict between the two suitors.

The climax of the story comes toward the very end when Ichabod is on his final ride through Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod remembers the headless horseman about to throw his head at him and then he is knocked unconscious by the “head” which was a pumpkin.
