Her smiles signify her helplessness at the face of her mother’s inevitable death. They express her love and concern for her mother along with the underlying pain and struggle that she undergoes in coming to terms with this bitter realisation.

The Lake of Innisfree is an uninhabited island within Lough Gill, in Ireland, near which Yeats spent his summers as a child. From the sudden remembrance came my poem “Innisfree,” my first lyric with anything in its rhythm of my own music.

In the poem ‘Lake Isle of Innisfree’ the poet wants to go to Innisfree because he is very tired of his life in the city. He hopes to have peace there as the poet states that ‘peace comes dropping slow’ which means that the quiet solitude of the lake will overcome him as he settles into life alone in Innisfree.

The statement refers to the fact that the poet had only then realized how old her mother had become and she looked close to death because her face already resembled that of a corpse due to her advancing age.

As per the passage, sitting beside the poet in the car, the poet’s mother was dozing open mouthed and she looked ‘ashen like that of a corpse’. The poet, with some pain, realized that her mother was actually as old as she looked. This is what the poet noticed.

My Mother at Sixty-six is based on the theme of advancing age and the fear of loss and separation associated with it. She must be feeling guilty of not being able to stay with her mother in her old age. She also wishes for the lost beauty and youth of her mother.

This apparently short poem touches upon the theme of a beautiful bond between the mother and the daughter. It shows how beautiful a relationship a mother and a daughter can have.

The sprinting of the trees symbolises the rapidly passing years of human’s life from childhood to old age. This image, which shows activity and strength, is contrasted with that of her old and weak mother who seems dormant, sleeping in the car.
