Urban legends — stories about phantom hitchhikers, deep-fried rats, and spider eggs in bubblegum — are classic examples of apocryphal tales. Antagonist: A substance that acts against and blocks an action. Antagonist is the opposite of agonist. Antagonists and agonists are key players in the chemistry of the human body and in pharmacology.

The English word antagonist comes from the Greek ἀνταγωνιστής – antagonistēs, “opponent, competitor, villain, enemy, rival,” which is derived from anti- (“against”) and agonizesthai (“to contend for a prize”).

The villain protagonist. Short answer: yes, a protagonist can be evil. Villain protagonists are nowhere near as common as heroes, but can be done well if you do the necessary character-building, which we’ll go into shortly.
