Unlike the United States, the name “John Doe” does not actually appear in the formal name of the case, for example: X & Y v Persons Unknown [2007] HRLR 4. Well-known cases of unidentified corpses include “Cali Doe” (1979) and “Princess Doe” (1982).

The need for a placeholder name comes up from time to time in legal cases — and sometimes people use the term Jane Doe to mean “an average, ordinary woman,” or an unidentified patient or crime victim. Originally, John Doe was a sham name used to indicate any plaintiff in an action of ejectment (a legal action to regain property) in civil court. Richard Roe was the counterpart, to indicate the defendant.

In that case, the name equivalent to “John Doe” in Japanese is “Nanashi no Gonbei (名無しの権兵衛) ”, nameless “Gonbei”. “Gonbei” is an old first name before Showa era. On the other hand, “Taro Yamada (山田 太郎)” should be equivalent to “John Smith” in this context.
