Dragonwings is a work of historical fiction that combines Chinese folklore about dragons with real historical events such as Chinese immigration to California, the great earthquake of 1906, and the story of a father and son who want to fly a plane.

Chapter 12 is the end of the novel Dragonwings and the end of the flying machine that Windrider has built. Although his horoscope seems correct that the weather is right and Windrider is able to fly, his journey ends in a crash and the destruction of his flying machine.

Windrider and Moon Shadow present Miss Whitlaw with a picture of the Stove King, a messenger to the Lord of Heaven who Tang people bribe with tasty foods so he’ll report good things about the families. Miss Whitlaw invites Windrider to tea and Moon Shadow to gingerbread cookies and milk.

Lesson Summary Chapter 8 is about protagonist Moon Shadow and his picnic flying gliders with his father, Windrider. Also in Chapter 8, Moon Shadow gets into a fight with a bully named Jack and proves that he won’t be pushed around anymore.

Lesson Summary In the beginning of chapter 5, it seems like Black Dog has recovered from his opium problem, but he soon falls into his old habits, attacking and stealing from Moon Shadow. Windrider decides to seek revenge and ends up killing another brother.

Chapter 4 is the beginning of the rising action for Moon Shadow and Windrider. Windrider faces what may be his first test from the Dragon King when he fixes a horseless. They learn about the dirigible and other flying machines. Finally, they help rescue Black Dog from an almost certain death.

In Chapter 6 of Dragonwings, Windrider and Moon Shadow move to their new home outside of the Tang people’s neighborhood, among the tenement houses of the demons. They move their belongings into the stable where they will live, and meet their landlady, Miss Whitlaw, and her niece, Robin.

Chapter 3 is dedicated to telling the story of how Windrider got his name. Moon Shadow’s father meets the Dragon King and learns that he was a dragon with healing powers in another life. Finally, Moon Shadow drifts to sleep with a monkey carving from his Uncle, sleeping in his new home for the first time.
