A blind old man who lives in exile with his children Felix and Agatha in a cottage and a forest. As a blind man, De Lacey can’t perceive the monster’s wretched appearance and therefore does not recoil in horror at his presence. He represents the goodness of human nature in the absence of prejudice.

The monster learns that the Delacey family is hungry, so he stops stealing their food and feeds himself by foraging. He also starts cutting wood for the family to burn in their fireplace, freeing Felix’s time for other needed tasks.

By observing the De Lacey family, the creature has learned that life is best shared with people who care for each other. He has lacked any meaningful human connections for his entire existence.

The DeLacey Family can be found in Volume 2 of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Though the family and the monster have minimum interaction, they play a major role in the monster’s development as a character.

He feels horrible more alone than ever, and wishes that he would have waited a while. He plans to contact the family again after a period of time and will talk to the children until the father can speak to them.

The monster tells that the family was once well regarded in France with wealth and social position. The discovery of the plot by the French authorities causes the ruin of the De Lacey family, as the government confiscates the De Lacey’s wealth for their aid in the escape of Safie’s father.

Instead, Safie’s desire to marry Felix comes from her dislike of her father’s religion and her love for Felix. Instead of embracing the Muslim religion (her father’s), Safie embraces Christianity (a religion introduced to her by her mother). This, alone, speaks to the honesty behind Safie’s love of Felix.

Safie’s father is a Muslim. He is very strongly opposed to the idea of his daughter marrying a Christian instead of a Muslim. Because of this, he decides against letting her marry Felix.

Anyway, Safie met Felix when he was visiting her father in prison, and they fell in love. At the time, Agatha, Felix, and the blind old man (named De Lacey) were respected and rich Parisians. Felix plotted to help Safie’s father escape from prison, but he was discovered, and the family was exiled sans all their money.

The old man, De Lacey, was once an affluent and successful citizen in Paris; his children, Agatha and Felix, were well-respected members of the community. Safie was eager to marry a European man and thereby escape the near-slavery that awaited her in Turkey.
