D = Standard fit. R = Slightly wider than D. E = Wide fit. EE = The widest fit.

Q. What is skate component side?

Skate Component Side. Custom Skate Component Side Type. Biomechanics are simple — The further away the weight that needs to be moved, the harder it is to move that weight. On a hockey skate, the runner is the furthest away from the core muscles of the legs that power your stride.

Q. Do hockey skates have edges?

A hockey skate doesn’t have a single edge, like a knife. It’s a 3-millimeter-wide piece of steel hollowed out down the middle in an inverted U to create two edges. An NHL player uses both edges on both skates, like a skier shifting weight from side to side during turns.

Q. Why do hockey skates have copper rivets?

There are two primary types of rivets used on hockey skates – copper and steel. Typically, copper rivets are reserved for the high-torque areas of the blade holder as they tend to be a stronger rivet that can withstand greater forces. Traditionally, they are seen on the heel portion of the holder.

Q. How long does a skate blade last?

Done frequently enough, a blade should last 5 to 8 years for the average recreational skater. Generally, the frequency should be every 20-30 hours of skating.

Q. Is there a left and right skate blade?

All ice skating blades have outside edges and inside edges. The right side of the left blade is the inside edge. On the right blade, the left side of the blade is the inside edge. The area between the two edges at the bottom of the blade is called the hollow.

Q. What skate radius do NHL players use?

A standard profile for a hockey skate is 13′: the blade has the curve of a circle with a 13-foot radius.

Q. What radius should I get on my skates?

As a general rule, the heavier the skater, the larger the radius needed. An extremely light skater can tolerate a very small radius (producing a deep hollow with lots of edge) because they do not have much weight to bear on the ice….Variables to Consider.

Very Light3/8″
Heavy3/4″

Q. Can I sharpen my ice skates at home?

Speed- and tour skates have a flat glide surface and can reliably be sharpened at home with fairly basic equipment. A long stone, and a fixture to hold the blades perpendicular will work fine.

Q. Do skate sharpening tools work?

With just four strokes the tool sharpened my blades so they don’t slip out on me, but don’t bite the ice too much so I can still slide across the crease. Actually, three strokes would have done it. And it comes with a honing stone to get rid of burrs. Totally worth it!
