Lamotrigine may make you feel very drowsy or sleepy when you start taking it. It may also make it difficult for you to get to sleep. If these symptoms carry on for a long time, or if this is difficult for you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about other medicines you could take.

lamoTRIgine citalopram Treatment with citalopram may occasionally cause blood sodium levels to get too low, a condition known as hyponatremia, and using it with lamoTRIgine can increase that risk.

• Diarrhea.
• Abnormal dreams.
• Dizziness or drowsiness.

If you’re concerned that taking the medication Lamictal (lamotrigine) may cause you to gain weight, there’s good news. It probably won’t affect your weight much at all. If anything, you’re more likely to lose weight because of Lamictal than to gain weight, but either way, the changes will probably be pretty small.

Unlike most mood stabilizers, though, Lamictal is less likely to cause weight gain. In clinical trials, less than 5 percent of those taking Lamictal gained weight. If you take Lamictal and have gained weight, the weight gain may be an effect of the disorder itself.

If you stop taking the drug suddenly or don’t take it at all: If you take this drug to treat seizures, stopping the drug suddenly or not taking it at all may cause serious problems. These include an increased risk of seizures. They also include risk of a condition called status epilepticus (SE).

Lamictal (lamotrigine), a mood stabilizer and anticonvulsant, is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of any anxiety disorders. It is approved to treat bipolar disorder and seizure disorders.

These agents do have some effect on serotonin neurotransmission. Lamotrigine has a weak inhibitory effect on 5-HT3 receptor, aripiprazole is partial agonist at 5- receptor and an antagonist at serotonin reuptake transporter, and cocaine increases the release and inhibits the reuptake of serotonin at the synaptic cleft.

Doctors often start by prescribing an SSRI. These drugs are considered safer and generally cause fewer bothersome side effects than other types of antidepressants. SSRIs include citalopram (Celexa), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva), sertraline (Zoloft) and vilazodone (Viibryd).
