“Happiness depends on ourselves.” More than anybody else, Aristotle enshrines happiness as a central purpose of human life and a goal in itself. Essentially, Aristotle argues that virtue is achieved by maintaining the Mean, which is the balance between two excesses.

For Aristotle, eudaimonia was achieved through living virtuously – or what you might describe as being good. By extension, the eudaimon life is one dedicated to developing the excellences of being human. For Aristotle, this meant practicing virtues like courage, wisdom, good humour, moderation, kindness, and more.

Aristotle. Aristotle’s account is articulated in the Nicomachean Ethics and the Eudemian Ethics. In outline, for Aristotle, eudaimonia involves activity, exhibiting virtue (aretē sometimes translated as excellence) in accordance with reason.

In Aristotle: Being. For Aristotle, “being” is whatever is anything whatever. Whenever Aristotle explains the meaning of being, he does so by explaining the sense of the Greek verb to be.

Aristotle uses his familiar matter/form distinction to answer the question “What is soul?” At the beginning of De Anima II….1, he says that there are three sorts of substance:

• Matter (potentiality)
• Form (actuality)
• The compound of matter and form.

The term was used by Aristotle to denote a predicate type; i.e., the many things that may be said (or predicated) of a given subject fall into classes—such as quantities, substances, relations, and states—which Aristotle called categories.

The five predicables were enumerated in the third century by porphyry in his Introduction (Isagoge ) to the Categories of aristotle. They are the classic quinque voces: genus, species, difference, property and accident. The notions were examined at great length in medieval logic (see logic, history of).
